This morning I was shocked to read a report by the UK’s Renewable Energy Association which finds that the UK met 19.2% of its electricity demand with renewable energy in 2014. This is the result of a 20% increase in renewable energy output over the previous year, and evidence that the UK is joining the rest of Western Europe (with the notable exceptions of the fossil-fueled Netherlands and atomic France) in moving to renewable energy.

I’ve long considered the UK a laggard in this regard, as the nation was well behind its peers for many years. And while it is still behind Denmark, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy for the percent of electricity demand met with non-hydro renewable energy, apparently it is catching up. Bonaire’s Electricity System Transformation

Bonaire is a small island off the coast of Venezuela, famous for its beautiful marine reefs attracting 70,000 tourists every year. However, what many of the tourists do not realize is that the majority of the electricity powering their needs comes from renewable energy. For the residents of Bonaire (pop. 14,500), the switch from fossil-fueled to renewable energy systems has made a world of difference.

Like many Caribbean islands, Bonaire originally relied on diesel fuel to generate electricity for residents, with a peak demand of 11 MW. This fuel had to be shipped in from other nations, resulting in high electricity prices for Bonaire residents, along with uncertainty about when and how much prices might increase with changing fuel costs.

Oil deficit coming? World may be consuming more than it pumps by year end, analysts warn

Make the most of abundant oil because by the end of the year the world may be consuming more than it pumps.

The global crude market will shift into a deepening deficit in the fourth quarter amid a draw-down in U.S. stockpiles, according to Standard Chartered Plc. While Qatar’s former oil minister says there’s currently a surplus of 2 million barrels a day, Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd. sees demand outpacing supply by 1.5 million a day by the fourth quarter.

Oil has recovered more than 40 per cent since January on signs that a slowdown in U.S. drilling will alleviate the glut that drove prices to the lowest in six years. U.S. crude inventories probably shrank for a fourth week through May 22 after surging to the highest in 85 years, a Bloomberg survey showed.

I’ve been thinking a bit recently about teachers and classes, wondering what makes a good class experience and what the role of a teacher is in that. I’m coming at this from a couple of angles, so brace yourself for more posts as I work through some thoughts over the coming months — and do please chip in with any comments: this is all such new stuff to me and I love to hear your opinions and experiences.

The question of teacher training won’t entirely leave me (though at the moment I’m putting my hands over my ears and singing ‘la la la’ hoping to drown the voices out for a while longer while I focus on my own practice). The significance of U.S. wind power in the present and future

wind_turbinesAccording to data released in March by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA), wind energy produced 4.4 percent of all of the U.S.’s electricity in 2014, and retained its position as the fifth largest source of electricity in the country. Renewable energy sources, including hydropower, now produce over 13 percent of the U.S.’s electricity, with wind power contributing a third of that amount. Wind power is also proving to be a cost-effective solution for states and utilities to limit pollution, as the American wind fleet has reduced carbon dioxide pollution by approximately 125 million metric tons, which is equivalent to 26 million cars worth of carbon emissions.
