Renewable Energy Saves Significant Amounts of Water, Says New Report

Realising the renewable energy plans of the Gulf Cooperation Council region (GCC) will result in a 20% reduction in water withdrawals in the power sector, according to a new report by IRENA.

The water saving potential of renewable energy is among the major findings in Renewable Energy in the Water, Energy and Food Nexus, released today on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit and International Water Summit in Abu Dhabi. The report provides a detailed analysis of how renewable energy can help address some of the most pressing challenges across the water, energy and food sectors.


During the power generation stage, water needs for solar photovolatics and wind are negligible compared to conventional generation, which could require substantial amounts of water for cooling. Solar PV or wind use up to 200 times less water than a coal power plant to produce the same amount of electricity.

Comparison between biofuels and hydrogen as alternative energy sources

The European Union (EU) considers both biofuels and hydrogen as viable sources of energy to replace fossil fuels.  Sobrino et al. (2010) examined, from an economic perspective, the advantages and disadvantages of replacing fossil fuels with biofuels or hydrogen in European vehicles.  Although each alternative source of energy has different reasons for being a plausible fuel replacement, the authors found more reasons for hydrogen to be the more environmentally friendly and economically sound choice. — Jenny Ward

Like many things, there may be a time and a place for using subsidies.But, they need to be better targeted. And, often, there will be better alternatives. Alternatives that do a better job of protecting the poor.

What to do about gas prices?

Americans United for Change has launched a campaign to Free Our Oil! While an interesting response to the Republican focus on lying to support drilling, I challenged this campaign, stating that this effort supports a quite dangerous framing of the problems and solutions.

If we make this just about gas prices, we are caught into a very dangerous framing. “Lowering” gas prices gets people thinking back to cheaper energy unit costs days. We need people, the nation thinking about enery as a system, as a “cost to own” rather than “cost to buy”. We (the nation) should foster upfront investment (help it) that will lower total “cost to own” by reducing wasteful use of polluting energy. While difficult in a robocall, every single message (I would argue) should avoid getting captured in messaging that fosters thinking that we can go back to days of cheaper gasoline. Over the…

Petronas Gas’ pre-tax profit and revenue up in Q1

Petronas Gas Bhd’s pre-tax profit rose to RM571.29 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015 from RM543.21 million recorded in the same period last year.

Revenue increased to RM1.1 billion from RM1.05 billion.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, Petronas Gas attributed the better performance to higher gas transportation and gas processing revenues, which recorded an improvement of RM26.1 million and RM21.5 million, respectively.

Malaysia committed to cut oil revenue dependence, says minister

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said Malaysia had continued its effort to reduce national dependence on crude oil revenue, amid lower prices of the commodity.

Wahid, who is in charge of economic planning, said the country hoped to reduce dependence on oil to below last year’s contribution of about 30% to national income.

He said the country had been diversifying its economy.

“We have been consistently diversifying the economy to reduce dependence on the oil and gas sector,” Wahid said at the Invest Malaysia 2015 event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Superconductivity is a rare physical state in which matter is able to conduct electricity—maintain a flow of electrons—without any resistance. It can only be found in certain materials, and even then it can only be achieved under controlled conditions of low temperatures and high pressures. New research from a team including Carnegie’s Elissaios Stavrou, Xiao-Jia Chen, and Alexander Goncharov hones in on the structural changes underlying superconductivity in iron arsenide compounds—those containing iron and arsenic. It is published by Scientific Reports.
